NANTUCKET SOUND SAIL #1

Sailboat regattas fill Cape Cod and the Islands with color, tradition, and excitement in the summer. The famous Figawi Race Weekend (Hyannisport to Nantucket Harbor) also fills the season with sailors, onlookers, and island visitors into one of the Cape's iconic sailing celebrations. Throughout the summer, Hyannis Yacht Club runs the Hyannis Regatta, a prestigious racing event featuring PHRF ocean racing and one-design classes, and Osterville’s Wianno Yacht Club has Wianno Senior racing and classic local regattas that embody the Cape’s rich wooden-boat heritage.

Among Nantucket’s summer sailing calendars is one of New England’s most celebrated. Race Week at Nantucket is filled with youth sailors, one-design fleets, classic yachts, and larger racing boats, combining to create a full week of maritime tradition and community. The grand finale will be the Opera House Cup, a beloved classic-yacht regatta with beautifully restored wooden sailboats that are spirited off the shore of Nantucket.

I always do my very best to attend as many of the sailboat races near my home on Cape Cod as possible, so I can create sketches and take a ton of photos to inspire future oil paintings.
