The history of Pollera in the Republic of Panama
In 2009, the Panama Canal Authority commissioned me, by way of the then-president of the canal, Alberto Alemán Zubieta, to create fifteen large paintings of Panama's national treasure, The Pollera, and all fifteen still hang now in 2025 in the corporate offices of the PCA in Panama City. I was given the honor of access to the judging area at the Teatro Nacional, something that had never been done before! There, I created numerous sketches and oil studies of the country's most talented and beautifully costumed dancers of "La Pollera"! This was the most amazing time in my entire career as a painter!
Every year, the grand stage of the Teatro Nacional in Panama City transforms into a dazzling showcase of tradition and artistry as it hosts the highly respected Pollera dance competition. In the heart of the Republic of Panama, this annual event draws the nation’s finest dancers, each donning the iconic Pollera. This dress is part magnificent vanity, national pride, showcasing the hand-embroidered costuming, a craft handed down for generations of women in Las Tablas and Ocu. The Pollera showcases over eighteen gold necklaces, each with a specific meaning that signifies a deep history. This tradition begins with the Spanish Court dress, worn by the affluent royalty of the highly decorated Spanish Court population. It is as much a national treasure as it is a symbol of cultural pride. The anticipation in the air is palpable, as families, friends, and visitors fill the ornate theater, eager to witness the spectacle that celebrates Panama’s most magnificent traditional art form.
The competition is a feast for the senses, with the Teatro Nacional’s gilded balconies and sweeping murals providing a majestic backdrop for the swirling colors and intricate embroidery of the polleras. As the dancers glide onto the stage, their dresses catch the light, revealing years of painstaking craftsmanship. Every detail, from the delicate lacework to the shimmering gold jewelry and elaborate Tembleques in their hair, tells a story of heritage and devotion. The audience watches in awe as the dancers move with elegance and precision, their steps perfectly synchronized with the traditional folk music that fills the hall.
But the Pollera competition is more than just a display of beauty; it is a living testament to Panama’s rich history and diverse cultural roots. Each dancer not only performs with technical skill but also channels the spirit and emotion of their ancestors, the conquering Spaniards of old... conveying the stories of love, celebration, and community that have shaped the nation. The judges face a difficult task, evaluating not only the dancers’ movements but also the authenticity and artistry of their costumes, the grace of their presence, and the heartfelt connection they bring to the stage.
Year after year, the Pollera competition at the Teatro Nacional reaffirms the enduring power of tradition in Panamanian life. It is a moment when the past and present unite, and where the country’s cultural identity is celebrated with pride and joy. For the dancers, taking the stage is both an honor and a responsibility, as they carry forward a legacy that continues to inspire and captivate. For all who gather in the heart of Panama City, the event is a reminder that the beauty of the pollera, and the dance that brings it to life, remains a magnificent and cherished symbol of the nation’s soul.
